Graco Children's Products is recalling about 2 million strollers that have been blamed for four deaths, the company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

The CPSC said the recall applies to Quattro and MetroLite strollers, which caused four infant deaths from strangulation.

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), a non-profit association dedicated to promoting the industry and the safe selection and use of juvenile products, addresses concerns regarding the recent warning about sleep positioners.

Unless instructed by a physician, it is best for healthy, full-term babies to sleep on their back to help reduce the risk of SIDS. JPMA promotes safe sleep practices such as "Back to Sleep" and agrees that, in order to avoid suffocation hazards, babies should not be placed on their sides or tummies.

For years, parents have been interested in the use of sleep positioners to ensure that babies are properly placed on their back to sleep. Sleep positioners are designed to position babies on their back, and prevent them from rolling over. They promote safe sleep practice and support the "Back to Sleep" campaign. Babies should not be placed to sleep in a sleep positioner on their side or tummy. To the extent that producers of sleep positioners make medical claims related to use of their products, they must be substantiated by law.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted in its release that these products are not being recalled. But this warning should serve as a reminder to all consumers to regularly check their products to ensure that they are being used properly.

JPMA members strive to produce high quality, safe products that comply with all relevant industry and federal standards just as consumers bear the responsibility to safely use those products according to the instructions and guidance provided. When we both do this successfully we create a safer environment for our children.

Normal, healthy infants should ALWAYS sleep on their backs unless otherwise advised by a pediatrician.

NEVER place infants to sleep on pillows, sofa cushions, adult beds, waterbeds, beanbags, or any other surface not specifically designed for infant sleep.

Do not create unsafe makeshift solutions, such as rolled up blankets or soft pillow supports if you cannot find items to support safe sleep needs.

Once your baby is able to roll over independently, you should stop using a sleep positioner

Make Every Night a Safe Night Campaign

More than 1 million baby slings recalled

WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than 1 million baby slings made by Infantino were recalled Wednesday after claims linking them to three infant deaths.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said babies could suffocate in the soft fabric slings. The agency urged parents to immediately stop using the slings for babies under 4 months.

The recall involves 1 million Infantino "SlingRider" and "Wendy Bellissimo" slings in the United States and 15,000 in Canada.

Infantino President Jack Vresics said the company has been working closely with the commission on its sling concerns.

"Our top priority is the safety of infants whose parents and caregivers use our products," Vresics said in a statement. He said the company would offer a free replacement baby carrier, activity gym or shopping cart cover to any affected consumer.

The slings wrap around the chest so on-the-go parents can carry their babies or just stay close as they bond with their infants.

Earlier this month, CPSC issued a broad warning about sling-style baby carriers, saying they pose a potential suffocation risk to infants, especially babies under 4 months. Babies who had a low birth weight, were born prematurely or had breathing problems such as colds were also at risk.

At the time, the commission did not single out a specific type of sling or manufacturer. It said it had identified or was investigating at least 14 deaths in the last 20 years associated with baby slings.

In Wednesday's announcement, CPSC said three of the deaths occurred last year and were linked to Infantino slings. It did not say exactly how the babies died.

In its general sling warning earlier this month, CPSC said infants can suffocate in two different ways:

--A sling's fabric can press against a baby's nose and mouth, blocking the baby's breathing and suffocating a baby within a minute or two.

--The other scenario involves slings where the baby is cradled in a curved or "C-like" position, nestling the baby below the mother's chest or near her belly. That curved position can cause a baby who doesn't have strong neck control to flop its head forward, chin-to-chest, restricting the infant's ability to breathe. "The baby will not be able to cry for help and can slowly suffocate," warned the commission.

Slings have been promoted by baby experts as a way to calm fussy babies or for nursing moms who can breast-feed their little ones in the sling.

Consumer Reports raised concerns about slings back in 2008, and had called on CPSC to issue a recall of the Infantino SlingRider. Safety advocates criticized the curved position that the baby can fall into while inside the sling.

Baby experts and breast-feeding advocates insist that not all slings are dangerous. They say carriers that keep a newborn baby solidly against the mother's body, in an upright position, are safe.

The Infantino slings being recalled were sold from 2003 through 2010 at several retailers, including Target, Babies R Us and Burlington Coat Factory. Consumers can call Infantino at 866-860-1361 to receive a free replacement product.

There are no federal safety rules for baby slings.

Infantino says it's working with CPSC and ASTM International, an organization that sets voluntary safety standards, to develop a standard for slings.

The CPSC specializes in product safety, and often negotiates agreements with manufacturers for recalls, when necessary.

About 1.5 million Graco strollers sold at Wal-Mart, Target and other major retailers are being recalled after some children's fingertips were amputated by hinges on the products.

The recall by Graco Children's Products Inc. includes certain model numbers of its Passage, Alano and Spree Strollers and Travel Systems. The Exton, Pa., company received seven reports of children placing their fingers in a stroller's canopy hinge as the canopy was being opened or closed. Five children had their fingertips severed and two children received cuts on their fingertips.

The strollers were made in China by Graco and sold at AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijer, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Wal-Mart and other retailers nationwide from October 2004 to December 2009.

In announcing the recall Wednesday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said the strollers pose an amputation and laceration hazard to children when opening or closing the canopy. The government advised consumers to stop using the strollers and contact Graco to receive a free repair kit.

The recall involves strollers made between October 2004 and February 2008. The model numbers and manufacture dates are on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.

This is the second major recall in recent months of strollers that led to fingertip amputations and injuries. Last November, about a million Maclaren strollers were recalled after there were 12 reports of children's fingertips being amputated by a hinge mechanism.

The safety commission is now examining all strollers with the designs that have caused the fingertip amputations, said spokesman Scott Wolfson.

"CPSC is taking a larger look at the entire product line to determine what steps need to be taken to keep children safe in and around strollers," he said.

For more information about the recalled strollers, consumers can call 800-345-4109 or visit http://www.cpsc.gov.

The recalled brands include several adult and pediatric formulations of Motrin and Tylenol, Benadryl, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, St. Joseph Aspirin, and Tylenol PM.
Minnesota Becomes First State to Ban Chemical BPA in Baby Products

Minnesota will be a happier place for babies starting Jan. 1. That's when a new ban takes effect on sippy cups and baby bottles containing Bisphenol-A (BPA). This controversial chemical is used in many plastics and in canned food coatings. Scientists are increasingly concerned that BPA, which mimics the powerful hormone estrogen, can harm fetuses and children.

Four other states are considering a ban. The U.S. Congress has seen two bills calling for a national ban on BPA in baby bottles and children's items. Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) introduced a bill in the House while Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) proposed one in the Senate.

Many Canned Foods Contain BPA

But last year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a ruling saying BPA was safe. The ruling sparked a public firestorm, as critics called the research flawed.

Regardless, corporations are getting the message. Most major baby bottle manufacturers, including Avent, Gerber and Playtex stopped using the substance in bottles they sell in the U.S. in early 2009.

Chemical and oil giant Sunoco announced it would no longer sell BPA to companies seeking to use the chemical for plastic products for children under the age of three. Companies purchasing BPA from Sunoco now need to guarantee they will not use it in products intended for children.

But cheaper bottles and many canned foods still contain what environmental health advocates contend is a significant quantity of BPA.

BPA Is Found In All Humans Too

The chemical is a key building block of many plastics. It is so omnipresent that it's found in the bodies of all humans as well as in breast milk. Scientists have had concerns about health risks associated with BPA since the 1930s. The European Union and Canada have both banned BPA entirely.

But the U.S. government has refused to ban BPA and still considers it to be relatively safe for humans in its current use profile. And several scientific panels of inquiry have claimed that alarm over small-dose exposure to BPAs is misplaced and that there is no solid evidence connecting BPA exposure to health problems.

Environmental health researchers believe, to the contrary, that BPAs are a big problem. They assert that BPA is an endocrine disruptor that the body can mistake for its own hormones, resulting in a host of nasty side effects. The danger appears particularly great for babies, fetuses, and young children, an age group that has the highest sensitivity to endocrine disruptors and other hormone-like chemicals.

Researchers have expressed concerns that BPA exposure can increase chances of lifelong obesity, impair brain and nerve development, and cause disruptions to the body's thyroid regulation system, a key factor that also impacts moods and body weight. A 2008 report by the U.S. National Toxicology program said there was some concern that BPA could impact brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses and in very young children.

Can I Reuse a Baby Car Seat?

Over a few years, parents and households can have a lot of car seats if they have more than one child. Different car seats are needed by kids at different times, and in cases of twins and triplets, you might have to buy several car seats of the same type to use together. Once your kids have out grown them, you may have several car seats in perfect or almost perfect condition which you have no idea what to do with. Parents often refrain from buying used car seats as they can never be sure if the baby car seat has ever been in an accident before or not. Parents may also find it difficult to get rid of the car seats by donating them to local charities, as they may not accept them due to fear that they may have structural flaws. Some states even restrict the legal buying and selling of used baby car seats.Baby car seats can be reused as long as the seat has not been damaged, structurally flawed after being in an accident or misused. A damaged car seat should be obvious to identify, just like most people can tell the difference between a durable, high quality baby car seat and a cheap or poor quality seat. Similarly, any visible cracks or bends in the structure of the car seat should be fairly easy to locate. Car seats are not damaged in a minor accident. Unless your car seat goes in a terrible accident, it is perfect to keep using it.

.

What to check when buying a used car seat:
The best way to check a used car seat for safety is to have your local fire department staff check it. They will inspect the car seat for safety and integrity to make sure that the seat has not been in an accident and is safe to use. You should however make sure that the car seat is not more than 8 years old. Even if a car seat has not been in an accident, car seats older than 8 – 10 years should not be used for any child in the vehicle.

Using a very old car seat can be disastrous for your child’s safety. New car seats which are now available in the market undergo intense safety checks and meet and exceed US Federal Motor Safety Standards and are also tested for Side Impacts. Most of these safety standards are new and it is impossible that old car seats meet these safety standards.

Never use a car seat which has been in an accident:
Car seats which have already been in an accident should never be used again. If you buy a used car seat through a trusted resource, a neighbour or friend, you have the option of checking the car seat thoroughly to see if it is damaged or shows signs of being in an accident. Buying a used car seat online through websites like eBay and Craigslist can be risky, as you will have no way of checking the car seat before buying it.

Never save money by buying a used or old car seat, especially when you are unsure if it has ever been in an accident before or not. These few saved dollars can cost you your child’s life.

When can you use an old car seat?
A used or old car seat can be used when it has been in a minor accident. If however the car has been in a moderate or severe accident, you should not use that car seat again, and send it to the recycling authority. These tips can help you identify how to tell if an accident was minor:

The car was able to drive away from the crash site without any problems

In case of a side impact or crash, the baby car seat was on the other side of the car which was affected, and hence remained undamaged

No occupant inside the vehicle was injured, especially those sitting in the front, passenger or back seat of the car

The air bags present inside the car did not inflate when the accident occurred

If the accident meets all the above criteria, you can safely continue to use your baby car seat and do not need to replace it. However, in case of a moderate or severe crash, when the car seat is even slightly damaged, or you are unsure if you should continue using it or not, it is always good to go for a new car seat. You can also have it checked by your local fire department or the Child Safety Seat Inspection Centre to check if you should go for a new car seat or not.

How to Choose the Best Breast Pump

Choosing a breast pump which will best meet your needs can be difficult, especially with a wide range of breast pumps available in the market. Choosing a breast pump can be challenging, but getting the best one can be rewarding for you and your baby. Busy mothers and mothers of twins or triplets can use a breast pump as an essential tool to feed their babies even if they are away from the baby for a longer period of time. By following a few tips on how to choose a breast pump from the different breast pumps available, you can shorten the list down to a few dozens. Here are some tips which will help you choose the right breast pump for your needs:

Manual breast pump vs. electric breast pump – The first thing to consider is whether to go for a manual breast pump or a breast electric pump. This totally depends on your preference and how often will you be using a pump to express milk. Manual or hand held breast pumps are designed for occasional use. They are also compact and easy to carry around and can be used without hassle when traveling on a long journey, on plane or by road when you cannot use an electric breast pump.

Manual breast pumps are also less expensive, but will require more effort by the mom to express milk. An electric breast pump on the other hand uses a motor to do the work for you, reducing time and effort used. Manual breast pumps are also extremely affordable and are mostly used by moms who want to maintain their breast milk supply by pumping between feedings. Breast pumps like Medela Harmony and Avent Isis are some of the top rated manual breast pumps available in the market.

How often will you be traveling – The second thing to consider is how often the mom will be traveling. Carrying a bulky breast pump around can be a lot of hassle. A lightweight and compact breast pump which is easy to use and assemble as well as clean should be bought. The pump should also come with a carry case, making it easy for you to move around. Carrying cases also have a cooling bag to let you store milk for extended periods without refrigeration, which is convenient for moms who are on the move most of the time.

Frequency of pumping – The next thing you should think about before buying a pump is how often you will be using it. Electric breast pumps are designed to let you pump several times a day and quicken the process for you with their dual pumping mechanism. On the other hand, manual breast pumps can only be used to pump one breast at a time, which can be difficult and time consuming if you want to pump several times a day. A popular Medela breast pump (Pump Style Advanced) is a top rated electric breast pump designed to provide ease, convenience and comfort to moms.

Availability of power sources – Electric breast pumps can either run on batteries or they will need an electric power supply to work. If you are a working mom, who has to travel a lot daily, for example by bus or on public transport, you will not always have access to a power source. Electric breast pumps are expensive, but they will not be of much use if you have to move around all the time. Make sure that you go for a battery operated breast pump or a manual one if you will be moving around a lot. Buying a vehicle power adapter for your breast pump is also a good idea if you use your own vehicle to travel around.

Read reviews and product specifications – When you have already considered the above listed options, you will already have short listed some breast pumps which meet your needs. Make sure you read reviews of these short listed breast pumps on websites and ask other lactation moms for their opinions regarding a particular breast pump, if they have used it. Customer reviews can greatly affect your decision in choosing the right breast pump. They will also tell you if the pump is comfortable to use, whether it makes noise or not, and if the pump is easy to use, assemble and disassemble and clean after use.

The study found that people who eat one large apple a day are at lower risk of metabolic syndrome, which could increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes. Apple juice and apple sauce were likewise found to be beneficial. Apple-eaters also had smaller waists, lower blood pressure, and lower levels of a protein related to inflammation.

How Do You Spell Dyslexia?

Dyslexia - the word itself is enough to make you want to hide. It sounds like a kind of a disease, like some chronic, complex disorder. The first thing I tell my clients who come to me with dyslexia is to disregard the word entirely, and to think of their condition as a gift, rather than a problem.

Scores of dyslexics have excelled in thir fields, rising above the rest through a combination of wit, talent, skill, intelligence and determination, providing that dyslexia does not consign a child to a life of poor achievement.

Consider the following list of well-known dyslexics:

Walt Disney was labeled as a “slow child” in school and went on to become one of the most successful producers of all time.

Steve Jobs was dyslexic, and today he is the CEO of Apple Computers and worth about $5.4 billion dollars.

Thomas Edison’s teachers actually thought he was mentally ill, yet he was the most influential inventor of the late 19th-early 20th centuries.

Nelson Rockefeller didn’t know the alphabet when he was nine years old, but that didn’t stop him from becoming the Governor of New York and the forty-first Vice President of the United States.

Sir Winston Churchill failed eighth grade and hated school. Years later, he became the illustrious Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World World II.

Henry Ford, John F. Kennedy and George Washington were all groundbreaking, talented individuals who were influential in changing the face of America, and all experienced dyslexia during childhood.

Finally, Albert Einstein couldn’t talk until the age of four, and he couldn’t read until the age of nine. He even failed his college entrance exam. Still, he is considered one of the geniuses of all time.

Thus, children with dyslexia should never be dismissed as academic failures. With treatment and a healthy dose of self-confidence, they are no less capable of achievement than their non-dyslexic peers.

Dyslexic children usually experience trouble with spelling, writing, and reading, and sometimes struggle with numbers. They may have difficulty following instructions and processing what they hear. They also confuse left and right.

As a result of these difficulties, children with dyslexia meet with failure in school, often as early as the first grade. While everyone is reciting the alphabet and learning to read, these children find the letters incomprehensible. And while the other children are enjoying reading stories, these kids stare at the page blankly. To them, the words look like squiggles. The b’s look like d’s and the p’s look like q’s. Sentences don’t begin or end where they should. Dyslexic children also tend to reverse letters and words, such that “saw” becomes “was” and “bad” becomes “dab”. Understandably, these children often lose confidence and develop severely low self-esteem.

Parents who detect dyslexic symptoms in their child should have the child tested by a professional quickly, before self-esteem issues begin to surface. The many different levels of dyslexia and wide variety of symptoms can make accurate diagnosing difficult. Parents must therefore ensure to have the child examined by a qualified specialist in this area.

Parents must also realize that reversing letters and words is very common among non-dyslexic children, especially up until the age six. A child displaying such a tendency should be closely monitored to see if the problem persists as he or she grows older.

Once diagnosed, a multi sensory treatment program is usually recommended. This means teaching a child how to read and write through a variety of visual and non-verbal methods. In all likelihood, by the time a child is diagnosed he or she has developed a strong distaste for learning and strong resentment towards school. Care therefore must be taken to find the treatment method that best suits the child’s particular needs and tastes so that learning can once again become enjoyable and gratifying.

In many cases, the greater challenge in treating dyslexia is restoring the child;s self-confidence and fortifying his or her fragile ego. This can be achieved through activities such as music or art lessons, and by developing their personal interests and talents, be it business baking or basketball. Dyslexic children must be consistently praised for their achievements and encouraged to pursue their goals. And, they should be reminded from time to time that someday they may become the world’s next Albert Einstein.

People with dyslexia have special innate qualities and attributes that the rest of us cannot duplicate. Scientists are beginning to study this phenomenon in greater depth and the results promise to be fascinating. The day will perhaps come when we discover a direct correlation between dyslexia and super-achievement, and the condition will thus be proven to in fact be a gift, rather than a problem.

While nursing has been shown to help prevent allergies in babies, other common practices, such as avoiding certain foods during pregnancy, using soy formula, or waiting until a baby is six months old to introduce solid foods have not shown any benefits, according to a new report published in the journal Pediatrics.

In this latest advisory, the American Academy of Pediatrics updates earlier suggestions that might have made some parents feel as if they weren’t doing enough to prevent allergies and asthma. in 2000, the group advised mothers of infants with a family history of allergies to avoid cow’s milk, eggs, fish, peanuts and tree nuts while breast-feeding. This advice has been tossed out, along with the suggestion to delay a child’s introduction to certain foods.

The only surefire advice remaining is to breast-feed. Exclusive breast-feeding for at least three months protects against wheezing in babies, but it is unclear whether it prevents asthma in older children.

Colo-rectal cancer, of the colon or the rectum, is equally common in both men and women. An estimated 153,760 people were diagnosed in 2007, and more than 52,000 died from the disease. However, this is one of the most easily prevented cancers because it often develops from polyps that can be removed before they become cancerous.

Seventy-five percent of all colon cancer occurs in people with no known medical risk factors. This emphasizes the importance of routine colon cancer screenings. March is National Colorectal Cancer Screening Awareness Month.

According to The Cancer Reasearch Foundation of America, when detected and treated early, the five-year survival rate for colo-rectal cancer is 91%. Healthy children tend to have a shorter and less aggressive tantrums.

But parents of children who hurt themselves or others and who cannot calm themselves without help should seek medical assistance. The research suggests that if the parent is uncomfortable leaving the house out of fear that the child will have a tantrum, that should be a sign to seek help.

The University of Aberdeen project quizzed 2,000 mothers-to-be on their eating habits, then looked at their child’s health over five years.

They found that those who ate four or more apples a week were half as likely to have an asthmatic child compared with those who ate one or fewer.

Women who ate one or more portions of any type of fish during pregnancy weekly had almost half the chance of having a child diagnosed with eczema within the first five years.

However, apples are already linked to better lung health when taken by adults, perhaps due to their antioxidant properties, and oily fish in particular contain Omega-3 oils, which, it has been suggested, offer health benefits.
It is, however, notoriously difficult to uncover links between maternal diet and child health, given the numerous other factors which may be involved in the development of diseases such as asthma and eczema.

Folic Acid May Help Prevent Premature Birth

Long known to help prevent birth defects, folic acid may also help prevent premature births, new research suggests.

In a large study that included almost 40,000 women, a team of U.S. and Irish researchers found that women who took folic acid supplements for a year or longer before conception had a 70 percent decreased risk of preterm birth between 20 and 28 weeks of gestation.

Dr. Katherine Wenstrom said it’s likely that folic acid is regulating certain genes that malfunction to cause early labor. “Now that we know that folic acid makes a huge difference, researchers can look at the different reactions that folic acid causes and see which might be related to preterm labor,” she said.

A premature birth is one that occurs before 37 weeks’ gestation, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Improved medical knowledge and technology have made survival for these small infants more likely — of babies born at 28 weeks or after, 90 percent are expected to survive, according to the NIH.

But the earlier a baby is delivered, the greater the risk of serious complications, including bleeding in the brain, infection, delayed growth and intestinal problems, according to the NIH.

The new study included 38,033 women pregnant with one baby. Women who had known pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia or high blood pressure, and women pregnant with babies with known chromosomal or other birth defects weren’t included in the study.

The researchers found that women who took a folic acid supplement for at least a year prior to becoming pregnant reduced their risk of preterm delivery between 20 and 28 weeks of gestation by 70 percent. A year of folic acid supplementation dropped the risk of delivering during weeks 28 through 32 by 50 percent, according to the study.

“This study saw a huge decrease in spontaneous preterm delivery for women who took folic acid for one year prior to conception. Now we can add prevention of prematurity to the mix of reasons for all women to take an additional folic acid supplement,” said Dr. Alan Fleischman, senior vice president and medical director of the March of Dimes.

In the meantime, Wenstrom said she believes that everyone — both male and female — should take a daily folic acid supplement in addition to a multivitamin containing folic acid.

“Cereal and grain products are fortified with folic acid, but the level of fortification isn’t optimal. Folic acid influences so many things. It reduces the risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, and it prevents birth defects,” she said. “It’s a simple preventive measure for a variety of severe problems.”

The March of Dimes recommends that women take 400 micrograms daily of folic acid before becoming pregnant, and continuing to take folic acid throughout the pregnancy.

Couple Tries To Name Their Baby “@”

A Chinese couple tried to name their baby “@”, claiming the character used in e-mail addresses echoed their love for the child, an official trying to whip the national language into line said on Thursday.

The unusual name stands out especially in Chinese, which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke characters to represent words.

“The whole world uses it to write e-mail, and translated into Chinese it means ‘love him’,” the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the State Language Commission Li Yuming.

While the “@” simple is familiar to Chinese e-mail users, they often use the English word “at” to sound it out — which with a drawn out “T” sounds something like “ai ta”, or “love him”, to Mandarin speakers.

Li told a news conference on the state of the language that the name was an extreme example of people’s increasingly adventurous approach to Chinese, as commercialisation and the Internet break down conventions.

Another couple tried to give their child a name that rendered into English sounds like “King Osrina.”

Li did not say if officials accepted the “@” name. But earlier this year the government announced a ban on names using Arabic numerals, foreign languages and symbols that do not belong to Chinese minority languages.

Sixty million Chinese faced the problem that their names use ancient characters so obscure that computers cannot recognise them and even fluent speakers were left scratching their heads, said Li, according to a transcript of the briefing on the government Web site (www.gov.cn).

One of them was the former Premier Zhu Rongji, whose name had a rare “rong” character that gave newspaper editors headaches.

It is often referred to informally as the at symbol, the at sign, or just at. In other languages, the symbol may have a different name (see below). It has the official name commercial at in the ANSI/CCITT/Unicode character encoding standards. However, no formal English term has been officially assigned to this character.

Sometimes I walk down the street just to stroll. I live in Brooklyn, NY so I don’t have much space in the apartment so I like to go out and just get some fresh air. When the weather is good, I sometimes go to Marine Park. It it something like Central Park in Manhattan, but on a much smaller scale in Brooklyn.

Over the summer I must have been there at least 50 times. I used to go a couple of times a week just to get my head straight and think.

One day I saw this father and son playing some baseball. The kid must have been about five years old. I was sitting on the bench watching them thinking how nice it is to spend some quality time with your children. They were playing for about 20 minutes when all of a sudden I heard the father screaming at his son how “he’s so stupid for missing the ball”, how “he’s a dumb kid”, and “how he doesn’t know how to play”. I was in shock. I wanted to go over and scream at the father and defend the kid, but truthfully I was too scared myself. The father looked like a monster screaming like that.

The father left to go to the water fountain about 20 feet away. The kid just stood there not knowing what to do. Finally the father called the kid over to have a drink. The kid smiled. He started walking over to the water fountain. The father was walking back, patted the kids hair. I guess he was trying to make everything okay with his son again. The kid got to the water fountain, but there was another kid there before him that was drinking. What I saw next shocked me. The kid pushed the boy away, and started screaming at him. While I couldn’t hear exactly what one kid was screaming to the other, but I did see that kid exactly mimicking his father.

I was very distraught with the situation but I thought it was a one time occurance. Then I came by this extremely powerful video a few days ago, and decided I had to write this post.

Remember what you do in front of your kids; THEY WILL MIMIC AND FOLLOW EVERYTHING! You may think they are not watching, or they really don’t understand what you are doing, BUT THEY DO! It is not fair for these kids to get this kind of education. Please be careful in front of your kids and watch your every move in front of them.

A Baby born in Iran six months ago, currently weighs an enormous 20 kilos (44 pounds)! The parents say the baby was born a normal weight close to 8 pounds when he was born, but he keeps eating every hour. The Iranian doctors do not know what this eating disorder is or where it came from. (Maybe the doctors should come to the U.S. for Med school, instead of trying to get WMD’S!)

Breastfeeding vital within first hour of birth

MORE than one million babies could be saved worldwide if mothers were to start breastfeeding within the first hour of birth. That was the message the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) sent out in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week 2007.

A global synchronized breastfeeding event was held in the Penang Caring Society Complex where 60 mothers joined their counterparts in over 21 countries to breastfeed simultaneously for one minute.

A total 128 mothers in Kuala Lumpur also participated in the breastfeeding.

“Exclusive breastfeeding (where all nutrients are naturally provided from the mother) is crucial for the first six months of a baby’s life.

“Not only does this save lives, but it also reduces the risk of developing allergies later in life,” said Susan Siew, the Co-Director of WABA.

Deputy Director Liew Mun Tip said after birth, babies were normally whisked away for weighing and cleaning.

“These procedures can be delayed to give priority on feeding, which in the long run, is more important,” he said.

A surprising number of fathers were also present for the event.

Pong Yong How, a first-time father, said it was important for fathers to encourage breastfeed-ing.

“Breastfeeding is not an easy job. Newborns have to be fed over 10 times a day, ” he said.

WABA has also set up a Men’s Initiative to promote holistic family involvement.

WABA coordinator Julianna Lim Abdullah said mothers and fathers were a team when it came to raising children.

“During breastfeeding, many mothers sometimes experience anxiety and feel very alone when things don’t go smoothly.

“We find that their husbands are especially good at helping their wives relax in such situation,” she said.
